PE: dA Related Collaboration Contest IIWelcome to deviantART Related's "The Collaborations Contest II", powered by #communityrelations. You will have two months to work with a partner in creating a dA Related deviation!
Ways to enter:
1. Work on your own. Basing your entry on an existing dA Related deviation (eg. find a visual suggestion and create a browser script to make it work).
2. Collaborate with another artist on a piece in one medium (e.g. make a stamp or deviantID together).
3. Work together to create two related deviations (e.g. a gallery skin design, and the coded version).

CSS Contest: Pure & White - EndedWhile people love to work on skins that burst with colors, it is now time to take a step back and try something new.
Not everybody feels comfortable using white, but this time it will be your challenge! Do you feel ready for it?
For this contest you have to create a new design or skin that uses white as the dominant 'color'. You are allowed to use only one additional color, but can use any shade of grey. There should be no black added to your entry either!
Only exception to this would be very small buttons and 1 smaller photo to enhance your entry.
Create something clean, fresh and pure that will enhance your own experience or those of random guests and visitors.
If you are not a coder feel free to create a design, if you know your business go ahead and create a complete skin. Choose on your own if it will be for a journal or a gallery.

News August 2012General
Once more i want to thank everyone who took part in our last contest. We have been very surprised that we got so many entries and it was great to see that so many people accepted the challenge.
Of course we will host more contests every now and then. In order to be able to give away prizes we always need to help. Not sure how we should handle this, as i don't want to set up a new account for point collecting and don't want to have them all on my own account.
Anyone ideas?
Other then that there is not much i can report from the CSS front, except that you should always take a look at the latest site updates from #hq as they often mention new CSS features over there.
Oh and just a random thought:
So far we haven't listed any UserStyles, but they are done via CSS only. Should we allow them to the gallery as well or not?

While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community.  It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.

Customize Your Literature ThumbnailsThis journal will break down the components of the various kind of Literature (and Journal) thumbnails now available, as well as discuss how to customize them in a journal CSS. I believe there's some overlap with gallery CSS, but these tips are specifically for the way things look in journals. :)
Anyway, this isn't a basic tutorial on coding but you can find great resources in groups like #eCSSited.
If it's a PDF or something visual and has a PNG/JPG preview, it behaves the same as normal thumbnails, so it doesn't bear mentioning here.
The different types of thumbnails
 is the standard one. Anything that is either written in Sta.sh Writer or with the 'Enter Text' option in the Submit dialog will have this. Some include a preview image within the thumbnail itself, but I won't be discussing that here.

Unfortunately, :bigthumb: doesn't do anything special. But with Sta.sh Writ
Media queries and youFirst, a quick primer, which probably consists of information that most of you already know.
So, you want to write an article with cool CSS, and you want to make it work nicely when it's displayed on the tiny screen on your smartphone. Tricky! However, with media queries it becomes pretty easy. By writing
.text { color: blue; }
@media only screen and (max-width:480px) {
    .text { color: red; }
}
...suddenly you have blue text at normal resolutions, and red text on a smartphone. Or on a browser which has been resized down to be really narrow.
In fact, try it out on this article! If you resize your window right now to make it narrower, it should magically invert its colors. Madness!
As an example of where this might be particularly useful, let's consider the #hq site update articles with that big ol' sidebar.

How the mature content filter works
All members over the age of 18 can choose to enable or disable the mature content filter to suit their needs. All members with a registered date of birth under the age of 18 have the mature content filter locked on and can not disable it. All logged out visitors have the mature content filter enabled and can not disable it.
The mature content filter is split in to two types, strict and warning. The strict filter is completely voluntary and prevents any deviant with the mature content filter on from accessing the work. Stamps are a great way to show your support for a project, a person or a group of people, spread awareness for a cause or promote a contest. It is also valid to do them just for fun, with just a funny image and/or message.
Since their introduction to the deviantArt galleries, millions of stamps have been created with a great variety of messages, both silly and serious, and you can see them all over the place, from journals to profile widgets.

Hi fellas,

A new contest is in the house! Yes, you have heard me right! A new CSS contest with premium prizes to grab for yourself is here for you! :D

You and I can see a lot of journal skins present in our DA's Journal & Gallery Skins category till date but we see only a few of them are modern style designs. As, many of you probably know that I mostly like modern design for my journal skins. So, I want you to go crazy with your own creativity and do the same for this contest.

Many of you might wonder, what is modern style web designs anyway? :confused: Please mind that I'm using the word "web design" here because journal skins in DA are nothing but web designs that we code in CSS. So coming back, a modern design generally..

    1) has few colors
    2) contains simple yet elegant images to make the design look smart
    3) has all it's elements well arranged
    4) has minimalistic touch (not always though)
    5) includes high usage of typography

NOW DON'T GET SCARED! It isn't that hard! :aww:

I am providing you with some example of modern designs below. You can have a general idea of what a modern design is from these. :thanks:





What do you need to do for the CSS contest?
You just have to design a modern style CSS skin. You may include different features such as dropdown menus, feature boxes, sidebar, progress bars, etc. etc. or you MAY NOT use any.. it is completely up to you! Just go creative with your design and follow the rules given below, that's all!


DESIGNING RULES
  • The design should have a solid base color or a simple repeating pattern for it's background

  • Apart from the base color you are allowed to use 7 more colors at max (A slight variation of any color shall be considered as one color)

  • Your design should not contain more than 3 images for the design (thumbnails of deviations and small icon images are excluded and are not counted)

  • The images can be used anywhere such as header, footer or in the body of the design

  • The overall space consumed by the images used should not cross approximately 35% of the whole design




HOW TO ENTER THE CONTEST?
1) Fav :+fav: this journal
2) Design your skin
3) Send your entries by providing a link to your deviation in the comments

All entries shall go to a favorite folder


SUBMISSION RULES

  • The entry has to be new and created by you

  • You can submit a CODED version or just the DESIGN of the skin

  • Collabs are allowed

  • If you do a collab work then the prize will be split between all the collab partners

  • Any stock used should be credited and get prior permission for it's usage from the owner

  • A maximum of 3 entries is allowed per person/collab

  • By entering into the contest you agree that you will allow your design to be coded (if it is not coded) and publish it to DA for everyone to use

  • Any copyright infringement of design shall lead to disqualification of the submitted entry instantly

I hope the design isn't possibly considered "too minimal", but since minimalism and unobstrusiveness are central parts of modern web design, I believe it fits the requirements well. As mentioned in the description, the skin is already coded as normal HTML (the presented screenshot is actually from my browser), so transforming it into a real Journal skin shouldn't be too hard (especially considering that I already tried to implement some of the restrictions that apply to Journal skins — more info in the description).

Anyway, good luck to everyone! :)

By the way, do you judge the submissions solely by their design, or are skins that are already coded (installable) at an advantage?

For this contest, only the design will be judged even if someone has coded it. There won't be any advantages for those have coded it.

It is clearly mentioned in the contest rules. :)
